Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the league divide girls by age and not by grade?
WUSA follows the national ASA (Amateur Softball Association) divisions, which are based on the annual calendar. A girl's "softball age" is her age on January 1 of the current year, and all girls born in the same year play in the same age group. WUSA leagues correspond to ASA age groups as follows:

WUSA Division
ASA Classification
Pixie
6U*
Freshman
8U*
Intermediate
10U
Sophomore
12U
Junior
14U/16U
* 6U & 8U are not official ASA classifications but are supported by Houston Metro ASA.

The division name designations (Pixie, Freshman, etc.) are particular to WUSA and may vary from league to league. For instance, "Pixie" is commonly used for all groups 8U and below by many leagues.

WUSA permits girls to "play down" one league level upon special request after review of playing abilities.
