About West University
Softball Association

Welcome to the West University Softball Association. WUSA offers recreational softball teams for girls ages 4-15 and competitive summer tournament teams for girls ages 7-16. WUSA is one of the largest fastpitch softball associations in the United States with more than 500 players on over 50 teams. WUSA has a proud heritage of building lifelong friendships and making family memories. Many WUSA athletes have played NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA softball at the collegiate level. WUSA tournament teams routinely place highly at Metro, State, and National levels.

WUSA is a neighborhood organization, created to support and promote girls softball. Regular leagues are available in Fall and Spring, with tournament teams available throughout the year. In addition to softball games and practices, WUSA offers off-field activities including the Opening Day Parade and Carnival and the annual Father-Daughter Dance.

Approach to Competition
WUSA regular season play is a Recreational League format that strives to strike an appropriate balance between competition and participation. In all divisions except for Pixies, scores are kept, won-loss records are used to determine standings and trophies are awarded for placement. Players are exposed to the concepts of playing to win, learning how to lose, and the role of a team player in a competitive framework. The league has participation requirements including all players rotating into the infield at least one inning per game and, in the older divisions, using more than one pitcher per game. Summer tournament teams play in very competitive environments with a focus on winning. In all of our teams, we try to ensure fun and player development.

Equipment Information
Each player will need the following equipment:
  • Glove
  • Batting helmet
  • Bat (WUSA will hold a bat sale of our stock of slightly used Pixie and Freshman bats prior to tryouts)
  • Bat bag
  • Mouthguard
Other equipment is also recommended, including cleats, sliding shorts, and knee pads. In the Intermediate Machine Pitch, Intermediate Girl Pitch, Sophomore, and Junior divisions, infield face masks are required for the pitcher and 3rd base positions and are recommended for other infield positions as well. Infield masks will be provided by the league in each team equipment bag.

The league provides balls, bats, batting helmets (as required), catcher's equipment, team uniforms, and certain practice equipment, include hitting tees and pitching machines.

Volunteering and Fundraising
WUSA is an all-volunteer organization and we need lots of help to make our league run. You will be asked to volunteer time to help out your team and the league in one or more roles including: coaching, team mom or team dad, picture day, field preparation, concessions, carnival, etc.

As a youth sports program in an urban area with high real estate values, our field operations costs are extraordinarily high. Unlike suburban leagues, we have no county park facilities available and all of our fields are either partially or fully owned and operated by our league (in partnership with other youth sports programs). Registration fees cover only a portion of our operating costs. Fundraising is critical to the continued operation of WUSA. You will be asked to participate in league fundraising activites, through either direct donations or in-kind activities such as our Raffle, Opening Day Carnival, Father-Daughter Dance and more.

Registration
