Spring Ball 2012 Is Underway!
We are underway with another big year of WUSA softball. Once again this spring, we have over 500 girls registered to play softball in our league. It's going to be a fantastic year, with a great concessions stand running at South Campus and field improvements at our other campuses as well.
Game schedules for the the 2012 Spring Season are now available. Click here to view or download the schedules.
For those who play at the South Campus fields, here's a bit of news: The league has contracted for the installation of new bleachers and SHADE STRUCTURES at all three fields! We are hoping that the new seating areas will be ready to go by the end of February. Watching your girl play softball has never been so comfortable (particularly with a snow cone and giant pretzel in hand).
Don't forget to register with RainedOut.com to receive text messages or emails regarding field closures. Click here to sign up. WUSA also has a rainout hotline that you can call before heading to the fields: 713-335-9567. |
Two More WUSA Players Join College Ranks!
WUSA is so proud of two former WUSA players, Danielle Allen and Kacey Cramer, who are now all grown up and headed off to college to play softball! Dani, who is a senior pitcher and outfielder at Lamar High School, has signed with Sam Houston State. Kacey, who plays third base and pitches for Episcopal High School, has committed to play at Williams College.
Dani started playing in WUSA at age 6 on Coach Chip Johnson's Comets squad after moving to the area from California. Kacey's softball career began on Coach Steve Howard's Shamrocks team (after a couple of wayward years in West U Little League). In addition to their spring teams, both Dani and Kacey played on many WUSA summer tournament teams, including the Tigers, Xtreme, and the Wave!
Dani and Kacey would like to thank their coaches for all their help over the years, including WUSA greats Fred Dupre, Don Beckham, Joe Franz, Bob Cannon, Vance Tillman, and Richard Legler, just to name a few. Ladies, we will be rooting for you at the next level! Way to go!

14U West U Wave Place 2nd in the USFA Fall Texas State Championship!
The 14U West U Wave fall tournament team brought home big hardware in the USFA Fall Texas State Championship, held November 18-20 at Lindsay Lyons Park in Humble, Texas. The Wave placed second in the tournament, posting a record of 5-2-1 overall, with bracket wins over the Texas Banshees, the Texas Stampede, and the Bryan Cobras. Only two tough losses to the Humble Cobras kept the Wave from the Fall State Title. The Wave have fared very well this fall against the best 14U select teams in the area, placing in three of their four tournaments. Great job, girls!

WUSA's Strike Out Childhood Cancer Day

September 25 was WUSA's Strike Out Childhood Cancer Day at the WUSA fields at South Campus. Every Fall Ball team was in action, and the concessions stand was in midseason form.
In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, the dugouts were decorated with gold and orange ribbons and bows, and our WUSA volunteer vendors were busy all day selling cool gold and orange socks, bracelets, and wristbands. All proceeds from concessions and vendor sales for the day were donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. These two great charities were chosen by the families of our two WUSA honorees for the day, Catherine (age 7) and Lauren (age 14), who have each demonstrated hard work, determination, and great attitudes both in their treatments and on the softball fields.
Our league was so fortunate to have Catherine and Lauren each throw three ceremonial first pitches during the on-the-field ceremony in front of a packed house prior to the 5:00 PM games. With longtime WUSA umpire-in-chief Ramon Blanco behind the plate, two emphatic strikeouts were ensured. Following the pitches, Ray presented Catherine and Lauren with prized mementos from his umpiring career---game balls from the championship game of the 2006 Triple Crown Colorado Sparkler Tournament. Each girl also received a jumbo softball autographed by all of our WUSA players!
What a fantastic day of fun and fundraising at the ballpark! The league thanks all of the players, parents, and volunteers who made our first full day of Fall Ball action so memorable!
If you missed the opportunity to contribute to WUSA's fundraising efforts for these two great charities and would like to do so, please feel free to forward a check to either or both at the address below. Make sure that you reference WUSA in the check memo line:
