12U Wave Finishes Ninth in 12U-B World Series

The 12U Wave completed its summer tournament season with an impressive top-ten finish at the 2012 United States Fastpitch Association ("USFA") World Series, held July 8-14, 2012, in Panama City Beach, Florida. The USFA World Series is one of the largest girls fastpitch softball tournaments in the nation, drawing over 500 teams from across the country to Florida each July. The 12U-B division is by far the largest at this event, with 117 teams competing for the national title this year.

The Wave secured its ninth place finish with seven consecutive victories over five days of competition, including wins over teams from Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana. The Wave’s streak did not end until late Friday evening when Xcel 99 (the third seed in the tournament and eventual tournament champions) capitalized on a wet ball from an ill-timed downpour, mounting a last-inning rally to steal a one-run victory from a Wave squad that outplayed them both offensively and defensively.

Despite their busy game schedule, Wave players made the most of their limited beach time, hunting for sand crabs, building sand castles, riding boogie boards, playing whiffle ball, and even going parasailing. Off the beach, the girls enjoyed trading pins at opening ceremonies, marching in the opening day parade, putting together gift bags for the Georgia Magic, playing cards and board games during movie night, and chasing a double rainbow after one of the week’s many rain delays. The week’s activities were a special way to end a great summer season.

Despite qualifying as a league all-star team, the Wave only entered tournaments that were open to year-round “select” teams. In addition to its top ten World Series finish, the 12U Wave’s summer highlights included two second place finishes at USFA National Invitational Tournaments, including one held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. The Wave also finished fourth (among 40 teams) in the USFA Texas State Championship Tournament in Beaumont. Overall, the Wave played in 56 games this summer in seven tournaments, compiling a record of 36-17-3, and finishing fourth or better five times.

Great season, Wave!
